Proudly Rural... Quaintly Charming...

0
As the highway winds through the wide-open spaces of southern New Brunswick, the lush green landscape that surrounds the Town of Sussex will awaken before you a scrapbook of memories.  It personifies everyone’s perception of the picture-perfect small rural community – where doors are open to strangers and hometown hospitality is second nature.

In Sussex, this reverie becomes reality.  Here, in the Covered Bridge Capital of Atlantic Canada (there are eight kissing bridges within 10 minutes of the town hall), you’ll soon realize that farming is more than an occupation.  It’s the very fabric of life.

The New Brunswick Agricultural Museum chronicles the town’s close connection to the land. And the Sussex Farmers Market is the place to be on a Friday morning—especially if you want to indulge your love of maple syrup, herbs and home-made preserves.

You’re as likely to find a treasured antique and a hand-carved woodcarving as easily as a great slice of cheesecake. (May we recommend the Broadway Café—recognized in Where to Eat in Canada?)

A tour of Armadale Farm reveals time-honoured dairy traditions.  In fact, it’s one of the only cheese-making shops in the province. (Be sure to sample the spiced gouda and creamy churnmilk.)

Afterwards, a stroll down Broad and Main will take you to arts and crafts central – Glass Alley –  where you will find a plethora of pottery, stained glass, jewellery and other one-of-a-kind creations… and the nationally designated historic building, the Sussex Train Station, which now houses the town’s tourism information centre.

Saturday night—the choice is yours. Take a self-guided heritage walking tour or catch the latest movie at one of the last remaining drive-in theatres in the Maritimes.

No matter how you spend your time in Sussex, one thing’s for sure: You’ll leave with hometown memories and the knowledge that, in some places, contentment can still be found in the simplest of pleasures.
