Facts & Tidbits

The Appalachians stretch 3,200 km (1,500 mi.) from eastern Canada to the tip of Alabama and encompass about 249,000 sq. km (96,139 sq. mi.) of land. The mountain range was formed between 350 and 650 million years ago during the Paleozoic period when the collision of tectonic plates resulted in a single continent known as Pangea. The Appalachians take their name from the Appalachee Indians.

  • As Mount Carleton, Atlantic Canada's highest peak, breaks through the morning mist, you feel the little quiver of excitement that comes with knowing Mother Nature is about to reveal her masterpieces.
  • At the foothills of New Brunswick's Appalachians, the cool, clear waters of the Tobique and Restigouche Rivers ripple with the promise of magical wildlife encounters.
  • And Sugarloaf's footpaths wait to lead you to 360-degree views of pristine lakes and vast expanses of colourful meadows.

Hike, camp, canoe, or explore the communities dotted along the mountain range. Our guide to the Appalachian Range Route shows you how. Check out our accommodation and campground facilities in Where to Stay.
